I am sure it is clear by now that I will select vintage over modern any chance I get. My taste in music is no different. I am a regular sucker for some live jazz. That is why I am so pleased that I live a short drive from The Knickerbocker Saloon. This bar is the oldest in Indiana and hosts my favorite happening of the week: Tuesday Night Jazz Party.
The 'Bocker' is known for featuring live music most nights of the week. I am known for drinking a ton of Arnold Palmers while I am there... Their bartender makes them just right.
Organized by Brent Laidler (above), this free event is your opportunity to see some of the finest area musicians perform. It is also a great environment for musicians to meet other entertainers. The crowd boasts every sort of musician from singers to trombonists. The 'jam' format gives the chance to play with people you haven't yet. Newcomers are always a welcome treat. The session is from 8 to 11.

Scott Pazera - This guy never disappoints.
The feel of this gathering is quite unique and this does not go unnoticed by the spectators. "There is informality, spontaneity, variety and quality. Superb. I just love it." says John Thomas. He is sitting with his date, Sonya Basaran, who says she appreciates the intimacy of the environment. Trumpet player Paul Geraci agrees as he commented, "It's a fun, relaxed night - I like that there is surprise talent from the area." He adds, "although you do have to put up with that Jen Wiley girl... and her blogging." Paul Geraci: Not only a musician, a comedian.

Tim Miller and John Tilford - Lafayette is so fortunate to have these incredible drummers!

Gail Biss and Dustin Hopkins enjoy some live local music. Both are
members of The Big Swing Band.
I love attending this jam during the week because I never know what to expect. What I do know, is that it will be amazing. The variety of music within the Jazz genre displayed at the Tuesday night gathering is refreshing. You can anticipate swing, a few bossa novas and a ballad now and then too. The changes in pace keep it feeling fresh and exciting. I am a singer myself and enjoy being able to see other vocalists put their spin on familiar favorites.
Musicians in waiting - ready for the next tune.
The house band consists of three pieces. Brent Laidler- Guitar, Jamie Newman- Organ and Tim Miller- Drums. You can tell the minute they begin to play that they know their stuff. The Jazz Party is a success due to these folks being so talented. The new musicians feel at ease getting on stage with them and a great variety of styles and songs can be played due to their supply of skill and knowledge. If they had a fan club, I would be president.
Kitty Campbell and Jamie Newman collaborate for a song of two.
Later, I was able to get Brent Laidler's take on the evening. "Tuesday Night Jazz Party - with the emphasis on party. The best thing about it is getting all the musicians involved. You know, we may not know each other but we all have the same music and it just works." When he says 'all the musicians', he isn't exaggerating. For the last tune of the evening three trumpets, a trombone and two saxophones were trading fours - not to mention the house band. The glimmering metal on stage along with a swinging sound was lovely way to end the night.

Tim Miller and Brent Laidler gettin' down
I would be so happy to see you join us for some mid-week relaxation. Of course, bring your instrument if you play! Come in your work clothes or get gussied up and take your honey on a date (there is enough space for a little dancing, by the way). Yes, many of you live so far away and can't attend. I can't have you missing out on this so a podcast is in the works. Please stand by...
Yours Truly,
Jen

You are too kind Jen. Thanks.
